What Is Hygge? And How to Bring It Into Your Autumn Routine

As the nights draw in and jumper weather makes its comeback, there’s one Danish word that sums up exactly what this season is all about: hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”, roughly).
Hygge isn’t really translatable into one English word, but it’s best described as a feeling of cosy contentment. Think soft blankets, warm light, good company (or blissful solitude) and slowing right down. The Danes have basically turned “getting cosy” into a national philosophy and honestly, we’re on board.
The good news? You don’t need a Scandinavian cabin to get hygge right. A few small changes to your home and routine – and the right candle burning in the background – will do the job nicely. Here’s how to bring a bit of hygge into your home this autumn, paired with fragrances from our Autumn Collection.
Start With Layers (and Light a Candle)
Hygge starts with texture, chunky throws, soft cushions, fairy lights and warm, flickering candlelight instead of harsh overhead bulbs. Swap your lighting for candlelight in the evenings and your whole home instantly feels calmer.
Try: Pumpkin Patch our pumpkin, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. It’s the hug-in-a-mug candle version of your favourite autumn coffee order and it makes any room feel instantly cosier the second you light it.
Slow Mornings, Properly Slow
Hygge is about savouring the little rituals, like the first cup of tea of the day, a few quiet minutes before the house wakes up, breakfast without checking your phone. Give your morning routine a fragrance that matches the mood.
Try: Autumn Fruits our blackcurrant, raspberry and fig with a hint of cedarwood and pine. Fruity, warm and genuinely one to have a proper sniff of before you even light it.
Create a Cosy Corner
Every hygge home has one, a reading nook, a spot by the window, an armchair with a blanket permanently draped over it. It doesn’t need to be Pinterest-worthy, just somewhere you actually want to sit for an hour with a book or your favourite show.
Try: Indian Summer our Champa flower and patchouli. A sweet, musky, boho fragrance that turns any corner into a proper little retreat.
Slow Evenings In
An evening at home done properly with good food, low lighting, maybe a film. Hygge is as much about what you don’t do as what you do. Put the to-do list away for a couple of hours.
Try: Havana Nights our tobacco leaf, oak, ebony and a hint of cognac. Rich, warm and a little bit indulgent, it’s perfect for the nights you’re not going anywhere.
Little Indulgences
Hygge is also about the small treats, enjoy the second biscuit, the extra five minutes in the bath, lighting a candle just because it’s a Tuesday. None of it needs a reason.
Try: Pomegranate Delight our pomegranate, plum, cedarwood, musk and leather. It’s deep, rich and a little luxurious, for whenever you fancy treating yourself.
Bringing It All Together
Hygge isn’t a big overhaul, it’s soft lighting, slower mornings, a cosy corner and candles that make your home smell like autumn has properly arrived. Our Autumn Collection was made for exactly this.
