Whether you’re new to home fragrance or already a devoted fan, wax melts deserve a proper introduction. They’re one of the most versatile and satisfying ways to fragrance your home and once you know how to use them well, you’ll never look back.
Here’s everything you need to know.
What Are Wax Melts?
Wax melts are wickless, flame-free wax shapes infused with fragrance. You warm them gently in a burner and as the wax melts, it releases fragrance into the room. No flame, no wick, no fuss.
They’ve been around longer than you might think. Chandlers originally created them to repurpose leftover wax from candle-making and what started as a clever solution became one of the most popular ways to fragrance a home.
What Are Clive’s Candles Wax Melts Made From?
Our wax melts are made from 100% soy wax, a natural, vegan-friendly alternative to paraffin that delivers a cleaner, more consistent melt.
Each wax melt is hand poured into cube moulds to create perfectly segmented bars (like a chocolate bar) and infused with our own artisan hand-blended fragrances. These aren’t off-the-shelf fragrance oils, every blend is crafted by Clive himself, which is why the fragrance throw is so rich and distinctive.
Each cube gives you approximately 12 hours of fragrance, whether you’re using a tealight burner or an electric burner.
How to Use Wax Melts Properly
Getting the best from your wax melts is simple, but a few good habits make a real difference.
- Choose your burner
You can use either a traditional tealight burner or an electric wax melt burner. Both work well, electric burners give you more control over temperature, while tealight burners offer that warm, atmospheric glow.
- Use the right amount
Depending on the size of your burner dish, start with one or two cubes. You want to avoid the wax overflowing the sides as it melts. You don’t need to use a whole bar at once; the segmented design makes it easy to break off exactly what you need.”
- Let it melt slowly
The wax shouldn’t boil or smoke. A gentle, even warmth is all that’s needed to release the fragrance properly. To avoid the wax bubbling or the fragrance smelling harsh we recommend only using a four-hour tea light.
- Don’t add water
Wax melts are designed to be used on their own. No water is needed in the dish.
- Never leave a tealight burner unattended
This goes without saying, but always follow standard candle safety. Keep burners away from draughts, children and pets and never leave them burning unsupervised.
What to do When the Fragrance Fades
One of the most common questions we hear is: “How do I know when the fragrance has gone?”
The wax doesn’t disappear, it just stops releasing fragrance once the oils have fully diffused. You’ll notice the scent becoming much fainter or disappearing altogether, even though there’s still wax in the burner dish. That’s your cue to refresh it.
Here are the easiest ways to remove used wax:
The Cotton Ball Method (while warm)
When the wax is still liquid but your burner has been switched off, simply place a couple of cotton balls or a small piece of kitchen roll into the dish and let them absorb the melted wax. Lift them out and discard. Wipe the dish clean with a dry cloth.
The Pop-Out Method (when cool)
If the wax has hardened, place your burner dish in the freezer for around 10–15 minutes. The wax will contract slightly and should pop out cleanly in one piece. A gentle push with your thumb or a wooden skewer usually does it.
The Warm Dish Method
Switch your burner back on for just a minute or two, so it’s enough to slightly loosen the wax without fully melting it, then slide it out with a dry piece of kitchen roll or a silicone spatula.
Always make sure the dish is clean and completely dry before adding fresh wax.
